about

It’s hard to say when or where this album started. Kyle and I were DJing as Doogatron from about 2012-2014 and sometime in 2014 we decided to switch to a live PA setup. I had always been playing live elements over Kyle’s DJing but this was our first time focusing on putting together a performance of all original material. We played one or two parties as a live duo that year but nothing too formal.

Meanwhile, I’d also been making music on and off with Mike for a number of years before Doogatron and 2014 was very much an “on” time for us as well. Mostly a home recording project we called Chill Spector (once we wanted to share music and needed a band name). I was between jobs for the latter half of the year and Mike was also in a transitionary state at the time so we somehow managed to get together to record several times a week for the rest of the year.

Somewhere in there is when and where this album was recorded. From my position, both groups were progressing nicely but each still needed something. My role was similar in both groups and it eventually became clear that Kyle and Mike’s skills that complemented mine complemented each other’s as well. Kyle had been a drummer and made our beats. Mike was playing keyboards and experimenting with effects having also had a background in guitar.

The first time all three of us got together to play music we recorded the session and it laid the framework for our next three years of playing live together. The unedited recording session is still available online and, while somewhat primitive compared to our later productions, I’m still proud of what came out of us musically without much discussion. We mostly focused on playing more live shows throughout the next year or so but all the while we were writing new beats and recording as much as possible.

We never explicitly set out to record an album. We never got together with the idea of writing or tracking for “the album.” I’d always thought of our early set-length mix releases as albums whether anyone else did or not. A lot of people probably didn’t know what to make of them. But we continued compiling recordings and sometime in 2016 when we were slowing down on playing shows I started actually going back through our recordings and early arrangements started to emerge out of our raw material.

Throughout 2017 we shared more than an album’s worth of tracks to give an indication of the direction our productions were going in. However, we held on to a lot of our most exciting material for additional treatment with the idea of proper releases in mind. This set of tunes seemed to clearly separate itself from the majority of our material and some version of this album has been floating around in our dropbox folders for a couple years now through endless, seemingly inconsequential mix changes.

This album is 100% our creation. Written, arranged, recorded, produced, mixed and against all advice mastered by Doogatron in various basements, bedrooms and living rooms of our homes. We did receive some mixing advice from Brian Kage and a friend of mine Brian Porter for which we’d like to thank them. While we’re at it we’d also like to thank any of our friends, family and fans who have supported us along the way, especially our significant others who are saints for putting up with us.

about

Doogatron Ypsilanti, Michigan

We are disciples of Detroit’s electronic music. We use improvisation to put the human touch in various strains of dance music. Using old school analog synthesizers and new school digital technology we acknowledge the past while aiming for the future. The sound is heady machine-funk and synth freak outs. ... more
